The aim of this study is to determine the amounts of radionuclides' activity present in samples of feed for young and adult chicken and feed for dairy and beef cattle, as well as in dicalcium phosphate (DCP) (CaHPO4), used as a nutritional supplement for animal feed. Radioactivity in these samples is due to the presence of the 238U and 232Th radioactive series, as well as their daughter. In addition, as it is for environmental samples, the activity of 40K should be an important source of radioactivity in all analyzed samples. Gamma rays were measured using a standard spectroscopy system, with a high-resolution HPGe detector. Measured activities in feed samples ranged from 0.23 to 1.51 Bq.kg-1, 0.67 to 4.21 Bq.kg-1, 0.29 to 1.63 Bq.kg-1 and 236 to 402... |

The common occurrence of multiple papillomavirus infections has been shown in several studies involving the human host. However, investigations with the aim of identifying mixed papillomavirus infections in cattle have been conducted only recently. In the current work we describe a co-infection with two different bovine papillomavirus (BPV) types that was identified in a bovine teat papilloma. The skin wart was obtained from a cow belonging to a Brazilian beef herd. A PCR assay was carried out with the FAP primer pair, which amplifies a partial segment of the L1 gene (approximately 478 bp), and the amplicon was submitted to direct sequencing. Because nucleotide sequences with satisfactory quality scores were not obtained, the amplicon was cloned and... |

A chemically defined medium consisting of D(+)fructose, L(-)threonine, K2HPO4, MgSO4.7H2O, ZnSO4.7H2O, CaCl2.2H2O, FeSO4.7H2O and deionized water, was developed to maximize the synthesis of actinomycin D by the Streptomyces parvulus DAUFPE 3124 strain. This medium resulted in the maximum antibiotic concentration of 133mg/L while using the original medium the production of actinomycin D was poor not surpassing 43mg/L. |

A comparative in vitro antibacterial potential of extracts (aqueous and ethanol) of five important medicinal plants (Aegle marmelos, Azadirachta indica, Terminalia chebula, Mangifera indica and Ocimum sanctum) were investigated using microbial growth inhibition assays against the common human pathogenic bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) of clinical origin. All the plant materials showed varying degrees of strain specific inhibitory action and ethanol extract of the plant materials showed higher antibacterial activity than their aqueous counterparts. Besides, T. chebula and A. marmelos had the strongest antibacterial activity out of which, T. chebula possessed a wider spectrum and a superior antibacterial... |

An indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA) for ochratoxin A (OTA) detection in green, roasted and instant coffees was developed using anti-OTA monoclonal antibody. Immunological reagents prepared were OTA-BSA (4.76 mg/mL), anti-OTA.7 MAb (2x10³-fold dilution) and HRP-anti IgG (10³-fold dilution). The detection limit was 3.73 ng OTA/g and correlation coefficients (r) between this immunoassay and high performance liquid chromatography were 0.98 for green coffee, 0.98 for roasted and 0.86 for instant. OTA levels detected by ic-ELISA were higher than by HPLC, with ELISA/HPLC ratio of 0.66 - 1.46 (green coffee), 0.96 - 1.11 (roasted) and 0.93 - 1.82 (instant). ELISA recoveries for OTA added to coffee (5 - 70 ng/g) were 81.53 % for... |

Most electrochemical reactors present reactions with the growth and departure of gas bubbles which influence on the reactor hydrodynamics and this study is usually complex, representing a vast field for research. The present paper had as objective to study a bi-phase (gas-liquid) system aiming to foresee the influence of departure of hydrogen bubbles generated on effective electrode surface situated on cathodic semi-cell. Nevertheless, it was idealized that the gas was injected into the semi cell, through the effective electrode surface With this hypothesis, it was possible to study, and numerically analyze, the hydrodynamic behavior of the hydrogen bubbles in the interior of the study domain, applying concepts of computational fluid dynamics by using the... |

Abstract In Brazil, the demand for the acquisition and installation of photovoltaic systems has grown exponentially and, with that, the importance of studies considering their effects on the distribution grids power flow also grows. Due to the intermittent nature of photovoltaic generation, it is important to approach the analysis in a discrete way, taking into account the changes in the power injections during the studied period. Thus, this article presents the daily analysis of the effects of photovoltaic generation on the distribution system through the computational implementation of a discretized power flow routine. The implemented routine can also analyze the effects of other distributed generations on distribution grids, whether those grids are... |

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate in vitro antioxidant properties and in vivo protective effects of the methanol extract of the Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra (HT) seed against acute hepatotoxicity, myelotoxicity and hematotoxicity in rats induced by cyclophosphamide (CP). In order to investigate in vivo protective effects of the HT extract on rat tissues, the rats were divided into nine groups. The toxic effects of CP and the protective effects of HT extract on nucleated cells that are produced by bone marrow, serum alanine transaminase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels were investigated biochemically. Additionally, liver tissue samples were examined for... |
